Iaido is a traditional Japanese form of martial art. The martial art consist of  smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard, striking or cutting an opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword in the scabbard.

 

While some beginner students may learn with wooden swords (bokken) most Iaido students learn with unsharpened swords (Iaito).

 

Most iaitō are made of an aluminium-zinc alloy, which is often cheaper and lighter than steel. Japanese made iaitō are intended as practice weapons and are not suited for any type of contact.
